A Word from the Pastor
August 1, 2006
“Rejoice always, pray constantly.”
(1 Thessalonians 5:17)
The longer I live and try to be a
pastor, the more I realize that prayer
is a major key in doing the Kingdom’s
work.
Thus, I invite you to continue to
pray for a number of things relevant to
the life and future of Orcutt Baptist
Church.
Just add them to your current
list.
Pray for Vacation Bible School next
week.
Information has been made
available.
Much work has been done.
Details are elsewhere in the
“Pilot.”
Of course, since “faith without
works is dead,” prayer without action is
generally powerless.
Make sure your children are here.
Invite their friends.
It will be a good week with your
support.
Pray for the Personnel Committee as they
lead the church toward a full staff.
We are currently doing much
better with the addition of or the
expansion of the duties of Wendy Perry,
Donna Williams, Loraine Hughes, and Ruth
Winters.
There are still a couple of holes
that need to be filled.
Pray for our church as we move
toward retiring the renovation debt and
then proceed toward dealing with other
needs within and around our facility.
The debt is now less than
$70,000.
We hope to retire it by sometime
in November and will then be positioned
to address the need of renovating much
of the balance of the building.
The next renovation will be far
less costly than that of the sanctuary,
but it will still be a challenge.
As is most always the case, our
prayers will not go far without our
action.
Pray for the community festival that is
less than two months away.
I would assume there are
questions about this kind of event.
In short, it will be a day of
music, games, outdoor fun, fellowship,
and the like all geared toward making
Orcutt Baptist Church better known in
the community as well as providing a
venue for enhancing the life of our
community.
It will be a church-wide
opportunity to “go into the highways and
byways” and to compel them to come in.”
I hope you have already made
yourself available to help with this
effort.
If not, I pray that you will do
so.
Pray for the possibility of a spiritual
renewal/revival weekend sometime this
fall.
Every church needs a “spark” on
occasion, and Orcutt is no exception.
The Deacons, Church Council, and
church staff have talked about and are
praying about this.
A couple of possible speakers
have been contacted.
I am fully supportive of this as
a means of renewal among us.
Pray about the possibility of a “church
start” initiated by Orcutt.
It is an idea I have been
struggling to keep at bay for several
months, but have not succeeded in doing
so.
I am convinced that there is a
vast “reachable” group of people in the
community whom we are not reaching.
I am also convinced that we will
not reach them with our current worship
methods, times, and leadership.
I am far more interested in
reaching people for Christ than for
Orcutt.
Thus, if starting a contemporary
church, even within our existing
facility, would help to reach them, I am
for it.
At this point, I have only spoken
briefly of it to the Church Council and
a few others.
In the end, there is much that
will have to be done before you would be
ready to give your support to the idea
and the reality.
For now, simply pray.
Thank you for the chance to be here.
Blessings, Reggie

Mission Opportunities
School Supplies for Menchville
House
In the
hallway outside the sanctuary, you will see bright colored paper attached to
the wall. These contain children’s
names, sizes and lists of school supplies.
These are for the children at Menchville House.
Choose one (or more of the slips) for yourself or Sunday School
classes can go together and choose more than one slip to help these children
and their Mothers prepare for a new school year.
Bring
your
clothing and supplies back to the same area and there will be containers
with each child’s name where you may leave your purchases.
We will be collecting these items until Sunday, August 30th.
P.S.
The 2006 General Assembly has adopted legislation creating an
annual three-day “sales tax holiday on the purchase of certain
back-to-school related items.
This occurs Friday, August 4th and expires at midnight Sunday, August
6th.
What is Menchville House?
It is a non-denominational, faith-based non-profit organization with a
Group House that can serve up to 16 women and 30 children.
Any woman who is employable, over 18, requiring shelter, and not
currently using drugs or alcohol maybe eligible to apply for herself and
her children (boys 13 and over are not accepted).
Our youth and college students have been very generous with their time
in donating to baby-sit for the mothers to have a night out.
Pray for these mothers and their children as they struggle to get
their lives back to “normal” and try to become more independent.
Please remember these children and their mothers as you purchase school
clothing, school shoes and school supplies until August 20th.
Contact Pam Chalkley (or call Cynthia at the Menchville House at
833-5980) if you have time to help cut the grass around their play yard
area. It is not a large area and
could probably be cut with a couple of weed-eaters.
There is not enough continuous space to use a push mower.
Don’t forget the bright wish lists available outside the Sanctuary and
Welcome Center!

be an exciting time for children as they learn about worship through
